BILL MORTON’S BREAK

At break time today, Bill Morton took a walk over to CBS2 on the former Block 37 on State Street, between Washington and Randolph…and ended up on TV. CBS2 was promoting the opening of their new studios by handing out generous samples of Garrett’s popcorn in a variety of flavors–Bill chose Caramel/Cheese–any of which are to die for!

He also received a free CBS2 cap for appearing on TV. We thought we’d share a Quick Pic with all of you regular readers. It’s not an everyday thing–someone takes a break AND gets a break!

A SAD DAY

Several weeks ago, I was walking up Morse Avenue to one of my favorite places, Family Dollar. A young (9 or 10 years old) African-American boy dropped a black plastic bag, which held a single candy bar, nonchalantly to the ground. He hopped on the back of a friend’s bike, and proceeded to drop the candy bar wrapper to the ground.

I caught up with these two, and questioned, “Who taught you to throw your trash on the ground like that?”. My chastisement fell on deaf ears, although I know they spoke English, or what passes for English.

My one regret is that I was not carrying my camera.

My other regret…well, that’s a tough one. I and my brothers were taught by our PARENTS to not litter, before not littering became the fashionable thing, before people became aware of bad environmental practices, before our skies and waters became so terribly polluted. Who is teaching THESE children? Are these children, and others like them, even TEACHABLE?

These photos were sent to me by a friend, “mcl”, who lives near the playlot on Paulina, north of Howard Street. These, along with my own and others’ photos like them, make me SAD.

He writes: (emphasis mine)

“In spite of TWO trash containers, this is how area residents dispose of their chip bags, food containers, rubbers (condoms), bottles, cans, etc.,etc., in the playlot on Paulina, on a daily basis. THE PARK DISTRICT CLEANUP CREW TELLS ME THE CONDITIONS REGARDING LITTER AND DESTRUCTION OF TREES & LANDSCAPE IN THIS PLAYLOT ARE FAR WORSE THAN IN ANY OTHER THEY DEAL WITH IN THE NORTH REGION.”

Incredible? Not likely. These residents, though they may live in subsidized housing, have taken the term “ENTITLEMENT” and twisted it, distorted its meaning to signify “I can do any damn thing I want whenever and wherever I choose to, and you can’t stop me!”

This seems to be the attitude prevalent in Rogers Park and across our nation. It is frequently associated with the word “FREEDOM”, a grave misconception.

I reiterate from a prior post: “Just because you are “poor” does not mean you cannot dispose of your trash properly! The 49th Ward has become a PIGPEN! And Bill Morton’s best friend and sometime-resident of Rogers Park doesn’t seem to notice!”

“Shouldn’t part of an alderman’s job be to stress the fact that residents of the community must TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR OWN ACTIONS?” (see: Thoughts on a Beautiful Day, posted September 27, 2008).

Littering the environment is a FILTHY HABIT of FILTHY PEOPLE! You can CHANGE your habits, but that’s hard work, and these people want nothing to do with hard work!

No wonder property values in Rogers Park have decreased in the past 5-6 months. No “normal” citizen wants to buy a home here and struggle to maintain it, when the “invited riff-raff and THUGS” foul everything they touch!

Hey, Mister Man…Mister Alder-Joker-Man! Instead of passing out coffee and your fave, Dunkin Donuts, how about educating people?

Instead of plotting with your cronies on which “architecturally insignificant building” to tear down next, how about creating a “Neighborhood Cleanup Committee” comprised of residents such as those above?

You could promote it as “PLAY FOR PAY”–just make it FUN and give them FREE FOOD and a DJ!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Lakeshore Law Group LLP files involuntary bankruptcy petition against Sunrise Equities Inc.
(Chicago, IL – September 17, 2008) — Lakeshore Law Group LLP as lead counsel representing a majority of defrauded investors filed an involuntary bankruptcy petition against Sunrise Equities Inc., a real estate development firm in Chicago, Illinois.
Sunrise Equities had recruited hundreds of investors over the past five years, many of whom were from the South Asian Muslim community, to invest over 50 million dollars in real estate developments in Chicago. “Many of these investors were encouraged to put their life savings and home equity at risk, and were promised a monthly income stream,” said Salman Azam, Managing Partner in Lakeshore Law Group LLP. Over the past few months, it became apparent to investors that Sunrise was unable to make good on its obligations to pay back investors, many of whom stand to lose their homes and life savings in the debacle while the principals in Sunrise Equities are no where to be found and are speculated to have fled the country.
By filing this involuntary bankruptcy petition, Lakeshore Law Group LLP intends to halt any attempt by Sunrise Equities insiders to improperly transfer the company’s assets, prevent any further fraud upon the victims, and initiate an investigative process that will open up the company’s books. This is just the first step in the process. Whether the company’s assets will be sufficient to compensate the investors remains to be seen. All investors seeking further information are encouraged to contact Lakeshore Law Group at (312) 321-6531, or info@lakeshorelawgroup.com.
Lakeshore Law Group LLP is a South Asian Community Law firm located in downtown Chicago with Partners; Salman Azam, Rozina Gilani and Nizam Arain.

Salman Azam, Managing Partner of Lakeshore Law Group LLP (773-354-3123)

What began here, utilizing Rogers Park in 1,000 Words as a means of transporting this story beyond the confines of the Chicago Muslim community of the Devon Avenue area, has become an ever-growing saga of fraud, misplaced trust, lies and suspicions.

Salman: your reputation will follow you no matter where you go. You can change your name or your face, but someone, somewhere, will know you. You shall be found!

Will the truth be found? I hope so. Will accomplices be named? I REALLY hope so. Will Salman Ibrahim be prosecuted for “fraud in the name of Islam” against his own people? If so, I hope he is tried before a really tough judge, brought to his knees, and forced to make restitution to the vistim-investors, even if it takes the rest of his LIFE!

A “pious” man would come forward, admit his guilt, and face the consequences. Salman Ibrahim CANNOT be considered a pious man. NOR CAN ANYONE INVOLVED in this shameful act.
